Entrevista a Karen Amanda Hooper

Hace unos días reseñe un libro llamado Grasping at Eternity (reseña aquí), y la autora fue tan amable en concederme esta pequeña entrevista (:

1. ¿Por qué no nos cuentas algo acerca de ti? (Why don’t you start by telling us something about yourself?)

- Soy una autora de libros juveniles que vuelven borrosa la línea entre lo paranormal y lo fantástico, y que a veces rompen una que otra regla. También soy una adicta al café y amante del chocolate. (I'm the author of young adult novels that blur the line between fantasy and paranormal, and they usually bend some other rules too. I'm also a coffee addict and a chocolate lover.) 

2. ¿Cuando te diste cuenta que escribir era lo que querias hacer? (When was the first time that you realized that writing was what you wanted to do?) 

- Escribí mucho durante la preparatoria, pero en su mayoría eran historias cortas y poemas. Comencé a escribir mi primera novela cuando ya estaba en mis veinte. Jamás pensé que contaría con la paciencia necesaria para escribir una novela completa, pero estaba equivocada porque lo amo y ahora no puede imaginar hacer algo diferente. (I wrote a lot in high school, but it was mostly short stories and poems. I didn't start writing my first novel until I was in my late twenties. I never thought I'd have the patience to write an entire novel, but I was wrong because I love it and Now I can't imagine doing anything else.) 

3. ¿Como surgió la idea para Grasping at Eternity? (How did you come with the idea for Grasping at Eternity?) 

- GAE fue mi primer intento de escribir una novela. Estaba horneando galletas en Navidad mientras escuchaba el radio y la canción Someone to Watch Over Me de Ella Fitzgerald comenzó a sonar. Eso me hizo pensar en la historia de Maryah y comencé a anotar todas mis ideas en un sobre. Después comencé a escribir y no pude parar (incluso queme las galletas). Dos meses después tenía 150k de un desorden de palabras como mi primer borrador. Cuatro años después, y después de mucha revisión, sentí que ya estaba listo para compartirlo con el mundo. (GAE was actually my first attempt at writing a novel. I was baking Christmas cookies one night while listening to the radio and Ella Fitzgerald's Someone to Watch Over Me came on. That triggered the idea for Maryah's story and I started jotting down my ideas on an envelope. I started typing and couldn't stop. (I even burnt the cookies.) Two months later I had a 150k word mess of a first draft. Four years later, after lots of revising, I felt it was ready to share with the world.) 

4. ¿Y los personajes? ¿Te inspiraste en alguien para crearlos? (How about the characters? Did you inspired in someone to create them?) 

- Algunos personajes están inspirados por ciertas personas de mi vida. Louise se parece a mi maestra favorita (la maestra que me dijo que escribiría un libro algún día). Anthony es mi versión de lo que mi Anthony hubiera sido si hubiera sobrevivido a nuestro accidente de coche cuando éramos adolescentes. Krista es la versión adolescente de mi verdadera amiga, Krista. Y la lista sigue y sigue. Pero Maryah y Nathan son completamente originales. Me gustaría conocer a gente que se pareciera a ellos en la vida real, pero ellos vinieron completamente de mi imaginación. (A few of the characters were inspired by people from my real life. Louise resembles my most favorite teacher (the teacher who told me I'd write a book someday). Anthony is my fantasy version of what my Anthony would have been like if he had survived our car accident when I was a teenager. Krista is the teenage version of my real life friend, Krista. The list goes on and on. But Maryah and Nathan are truly original. I wish I knew people like them in real life, but they came entirely from my imagination.) 

5. ¿Quien es tu personaje favorite? O, ¿con cual te identificas mas? (Who is your favorite character? Or which character is the one that is most like you?) 

- Eso es como preguntar a que hijo preferiría! Es imposible. LOL. Pero diré que tengo un enorme enamoramiento con Nathan. A veces me gustaría cambiar de lugar con Maryah para poder tener un poco de tiempo con el. (That's like asking me to pick a favorite child! It's impossible. lol. But I will say that I totally have a crush on Nathan. Sometimes I wish I could trade places with Maryah just so I could spend some fictional time with Natahan.) 

6. ¿Por que escogiste Sedona como el fondo para tu historia? ¿Has estado ahí alguna vez? (Why did you choose Sedona as the background for your story? Have you ever been there?) 

- Sedona siempre ha sido un lugar magico para mi. La creencia del Vortex mencionado en el libro es una cosa real y popular en Sedona, y jugara un papel muy importante en los siguientes libros. Y si, he estado en Sedona y lo adoro. Mi amiga Krista y yo nos conocimos ahí cuando ya casi había terminado de escribir mi primera versión de GAE. Tuvimos muy buenos momentos juntas. Como cuando un Mustang negro y rojo paso junto a nosotros, y cuando accidentalmente encontramos una casa que se parecía a la de los Luna. Fue como si mi historia se volviera realidad (: (Sedona has always been a magical place to me. The vortex belief mentioned in the book is a real and popular thing in Sedona, and it's going to play a big part in later books in the series. Yes, I have been there and I love that town. My friend Krista and I actually met there when I was almost finished writing the first version of GAE. We had some very crazy cool moments. Like when a black and red Mustang roared by us, and when we accidentally found a house that looked exactly like the Luna house. It was like my story came to life.) 

7. Si pudiera tener un super poder, ¿cual erigirías? (If you can have any super power, which would it be?) 

- Oh cielos. Quiero muchos super poderes, pero si TUVIERA que escoger uno, probablemente escogería la habilidad de sanar a otras personas. No puedo soportar ver a la gente que amo sufrir o tener dolor. (Oh man. I want so many superpowers, but if I HAD to choose one I'd probably choose the ability to heal others. I can't stand seeing the people I love suffering or in pain.) 

8. ¿Crees que todos en este mundo estan destinados a alguien? ¿Qué todos tienes un alma gemela? (Do you believe that everyone in this world is destined to someone? That everyone has a soul mate?) 

- Si y no. Y lo dejare así porque podría escribir un libro entero solo de ese tema. (Yes and no. And I'll leave it at that because I could write an entire novel on that subject alone.) 

9. Me hiciste enamorarme de Nathan, ¿que tanto estara en los siguientes libros? ¿Habra mas capítulos desde su punto de vista? (You made me fall so hard for Nate, how much is he going to be in the next books of the series? There will be more chapters from his POV?) 

- Claro que habrá muchísimo mas de Nathan en el siguiente libro! Pero no habrá capítulos desde su punto de vista porque no son necesarios en esta ocasión, pero prometo que habrá mucha acción por parte de el. (Of course there will be lots of Nate in the next book! There won't be chapters from his POV because it's not needed this time, but I promise there is LOTS of great Nathan action.) 

10. ¿Que nos puedes decir de la secuela, Taking Back Forever, y como se te ocurrió un titulo tan bonito? (What can you tell us about the sequel, Taking Back Forever, and how did you come with such a lovely title?) 

- Puedo decir que muchas de las preguntas importantes serán respondidas. Habrá mucha diversión y acción con los super poderes, y podrán conocer mucho mejor a Harmony. Taking Back Forever es solo uno de muchos títulos que estuvieron en mi cabeza, pero le queda muy bien a la historia. (I can tell you that some of the big questions will be answered. There will be lots of fun super power action, and you will get to know Harmony much better. Taking Back Forever is one of the many titles I brainstormed, but it fit the story the best.) 

11. ¿Que te gustaría decirle a la gente que aun no lee Grasping at Eternity? (What would you like to say to the people that still hasn’t read Grasping at Eternity?) 

- Si les gustan las grandes historias de amor, léanlo, porque esta es una historia mágica. (If you enjoy a great love story, read it, because it's a magical one.)
